You take care of your physical hygiene, do you take care of your emotional hygiene?
Much like the plaque build up on your teeth your psyche can build up gunk when it’s not tended to. When you take care of your emotional and physical needs regularly you mitigate a bigger problem later on like cavities or a complete breakdown. You also show yourself some much needed love which builds self-esteem and trust with yourself.
This simple Mental Health Check In has four only four questions and can be done in under a minute.
Mental Health Check In
1.) How am I feeling right now? Feelings are sensations in your body. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths then scan your body for sensations such as tension or temperature variations.
2.) Am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired or Thirsty? This forms the acronym H.A.L.T. a reminder to stop what you’re doing if you are experiencing any of these and meet your needs.
3.) What do I need to do to take care of myself right now? Usually you’ll intuitively know the answer. If you’re not used to listening to our own needs this may take some time to develop. Do your best. Like all things it gets easier with practice.
4.) I agree to take care of myself by doing _______ today. If you don’t make an explicit commitment to yourself you’re less likely to take action. So commit. You deserve it and need it.
